When installing a Chrome extension, you may see a strong warning saying it can “read and change all your data on all websites.” That can feel like a surprisingly broad permission when all you wanted was a cute cat.

Why is a broad permission required?

Kotoro is not a service that runs only inside one particular website. It is a Chrome extension that displays a cat across the sites you visit and provides interactions such as dragging and right-click chat.

To do this, Kotoro must be allowed to add its interface elements to the page you are viewing. Chrome describes the technical ability to display and operate elements on a page with the broad “read and change” permission label.

In terms closer to Kotoro's actual purpose, the request would sound like this:

“Allow a cat and chat window to appear and move on this web page?”

What Kotoro does on a page

The permission supports Kotoro's core experience:

• Displaying the cat on a web page
• Handling movement, jumps, and animation
• Letting you drag the cat and adjust its size
• Opening chat with a right-click
• Showing the first-time tutorial

The cat's position, size, and selected settings are stored in browser storage so they can continue across pages.

What Kotoro does not do

A broad permission label does not mean Kotoro performs every action that might be technically possible. Kotoro is not built to:

• Collect sensitive information such as passwords, card numbers, or national identification numbers
• Secretly save what a user types
• Automatically send the contents of every visited page to a server
• Insert advertising, change shopping prices, or replace page content

When is page content used?

To ask for a summary or explanation of what you are reading, you can explicitly choose to include page content in the conversation. In that case, some page information needed to generate the answer may be used.

Displaying, moving, or resizing the cat during ordinary use does not by itself send the entire page to the server.

Do not include page content when sensitive information is visible. With any service, it is safest to check what will be shared before adding it to a conversation.

You can review permissions at any time

Chrome's extension management page lets you review Kotoro's permissions or disable the extension. Removing access prevents the core feature of displaying the cat across web pages, but you can allow it again whenever you choose.
