Black Cat wakes when the sun goes down. During the day, the cat sleeps with a curled tail behind an old row of earthenware jars. When the last shop closes, Black Cat quietly steps onto the night road. No one ever assigned the task, but checking that every window lamp is lit and no gate has blown open has become an old habit.

Late one summer night, the smell of rain drifted over the mountain. Turning into an alley, Black Cat found a paper lamp tipped over by the wind beside a window. Inside, a child who could not sleep kept worrying the edge of a blanket. The cat slowly pushed the lamp upright with one paw and sat below the window until its round glow returned.

Soon the child noticed two black ears beyond the glass. “So you were there.” At the sound of that small voice, Black Cat answered only with one slow blink. From that night on, the villagers began leaving tiny lights by their windows whenever their hearts felt unsettled, so Black Cat would never lose the way.

Black Cat does not spend long searching for comforting words. The cat simply stays for as long as needed.

Cheese Cat is the first in the village to discover morning. Before the sun clears the ridge, the cat climbs to the highest roof and follows the light as it spreads one tile at a time. Every newly warm spot makes the tip of that tail sway first, as though Cheese Cat has noticed the day's good news before anyone else.

One morning, a single dandelion seed floated onto the roof. Cheese Cat reached for it, missed, and tried again. The seed spun between a clothesline and persimmon branches before settling on an old roof bell. When the cat touched the bell carefully, a small clear note rolled down across the village.

The baker pulled out the first dough. A grandmother by the well hung out her blankets. A child who did not want to go to school tied their shoelaces again. No one called the sound the opening of a grand festival, but Cheese Cat celebrated enough for everyone. One dandelion seed and a patch of sunlight were all the reason morning needed.

With Cheese Cat nearby, even the smallest success feels like a rather wonderful event.

Love Cat can smell feelings that have not yet found words. Gratitude left unsaid smells warm like fresh bread. An apology swallowed too long smells like wood in the rain. The cat follows those scents, waits quietly at a door, and raises its tail only when someone finally brings out paper and a pencil.

Rainbow Cat lives on a sky bridge that appears only after the rain. To be precise, the cat is said to live somewhere between the real bridge and its reflection in a puddle. Search too hard and you will see nothing; let your thoughts wander, and a colorful tail may sweep past the edge of your vision.

The cat's favorite things are dreams from which people woke too soon. Paper boats flying through the sky, talking flowerpots, and staircases made of clouds remain inside morning raindrops. Rainbow Cat taps each one with a paw and gathers it. One drop holds a star, another a sea, and a third a friend who does not have a name yet.

Rainbow Cat never returns a dream unchanged. A frightening scene receives a small door. A lonely one gets a second chair. At sunset, the cat tosses the drops into the air and scatters them through the villagers' imaginations. That is why a good idea sometimes arrives in the middle of a dull afternoon: one person's unfinished dream has reached someone else as the beginning of a story.

Rainbow Cat does not correct strange ideas. The cat gives them a small push so they can travel farther.

On rainy days, Kind Cat sits beneath the awning of an old teahouse. The shop closes late in the afternoon, but water keeps falling from the eaves in a steady rhythm and a little warmth remains in the kettle. The cat slides a dry towel beneath each leak and always leaves one empty place nearby.

The first person to find that place was an apprentice who had made a mistake at the market. “Everything went wrong today,” the child complained. Kind Cat did not look shocked or rush to say that everything was fine. The cat swept the floor once with its tail and listened to the rain. Only much later did the child begin to describe, one by one, what had truly hurt.

As the rain softened, the child decided to apologize the next day. Instead of praising the decision loudly, Kind Cat gently bumped a forehead against the child's knee. After that, villagers with heavy hearts began visiting the teahouse awning. The cat did not know the answer to every problem, but knew how to stay until a story had reached its end.

Kind Cat does not hurry sadness away. The cat makes a safe place where it can rest until the rain stops.

Smart Cat asks the most questions in the village's smallest library. When an unfamiliar scent appears between crowded shelves, the cat leans in close. At a strange sound, each ear turns in a different direction. Smart Cat never pretends to know an answer immediately. Instead, the right books are opened on the floor and compared carefully with maps and records.

One summer night, a lost firefly entered through the round window. The rest of its group had already crossed the valley. Smart Cat checked the direction it had flown from, the evening wind, and an old star chart. After opening three books and a scroll map, the cat found five stars arranged like a river and placed one paw on the exact path home.

The firefly flashed brightly once in front of the cat's nose, then flew through the window. A moment later, dozens of lights across the valley blinked in reply. Only then did Smart Cat close the books and stretch. Villagers come to this library with difficult questions, but the cat's first words are always the same: “Wait a moment. Let us check together.”

For Smart Cat, “I don't know” is not an ending. It is the beginning of a path to explore together.
